lolcats iconA brief history and origins of the LOLCats meme and its branches into other related memes such as Fail and Faildogs, among many others.

lol originLike a inside joke that goes on too long and understood by too few people to be universally humorous, LOLCats continues to grow and begins to spread beyond the clowder.

The LOLCats meme are user generated images of cats in various poses captioned with a humorous phrase in broken child-like English. The combination provides a amusing visualization of what a cat would say if it had a vocabulary and a sense of humor.

(that explanation was a good way of killing something that was already on the cusp of humor)

LOLCats meme had its humble origins in a comic strip in the early 1900s:

“Aloysius “Gorilla” Koford, was a cartoonist. From 1912-1913 he produced a comic strip which was featured in 17 newspapers, including the Philadephia Star-Democrat, the Tampa Telegraph, and the Santa Fe Good-Newser. The strip was entitled “the Laugh-Out-Loud Cats” and featured the exploits of one Meowlin Q. Kitteh (a sort of cat hobo-raconteur) and his young hapless kitten friend, Pip.” – Full Story

lolcat panelThat of course, is the romantic origin, theres holes apparently in the story, as cheeseburgers were ‘invented’ in 1924. A more boring description of its origin is available in its wiki.

Growth and infection

As the meme grew, it spread to the cat’s nemesis, the dog, in the form of Faildogs, and ultimately to the Fail campaign to describe picture of anything that has failed or obviously doomed to fail. Other branches include a mashup of LOLCats and Gofugyourself, a Government based LOLFed, a president based LOLPresident, and even a mashup with Postsecret, lolsecretz and lets not forget LOLTrek.

As you can see, its infecting the entire the Internetz. Yu canz stopz its! (I tried)
