Incredible FREE Phone Directory Service by Google

google 411 iconI’m a great fan of all things google. If I could, I would marry it. Among a myriad of great (free) services they provide, one not-as-well-known-as-search feature that everybody could use is the GOOG-411 service.

google manOne outrageous fee that pops up on people’s cell phone is the 411 service fees. Rates vary between carriers, but range between $1-$2!! I used to call family members and friends at home to have them look up numbers in the phone book rather than getting charged the ridiculous fee. (I’m sure they loved it when I asked them to drop whatever they were doing to look up a number for me)

Google 411 PicGOOG-411 comes to the rescue. This amazing service provided by Google gives you access to free directory assistance (search by name or category). The number is: 1-800-GOOG-411 (Thats 1-800-466-4411) (Temporarily stop reading this entry, and put that in your contacts on your phone NOW)

Check out the website: http://www.google.com/goog411/

Notable features of the GOOG-411

  • FREE
  • Its a 1800 number, so you can call from landlines (work, payphones) if you don’t have access to your mobile and it will connect you to the business for free (no long distance charges!)
  • Option to send you a text message to the mobile for future reference.
  • goog411 logoOption to send you a URL of the google map location for the internet capable phones.
  • Did I mention Free?

Like I said, its great, it works. (Available in the US and recently opened it up to Canada!) It does rely on voice recognition technology, so make sure you take out the marbles from your mouth before trying to enunciate cities like Ypsilanti, Michigan or Pu`uhonua O Honaunau National Historical Park in Hawaii.
